Think Big: Advice from a Former Coffee Hawker: Introduction

A graphic photo of a person thinking bigThink big: That is Michelle Gass’s mantra. A Principle that served her well at the helm of Starbucks.

She helped the company move into 33 countries.

When she first joined the coffee-based firm, she was asked to get behind a new drink. Starbucks had just launched the Frappucino, and Gass was ordered to develop a growth strategy to make the drink popular.

What began as a side item now earns Starbucks more than $2 billion annually. That’s the income from just one drink. To say that Gass’ efforts worked out is obvious.

Her think big, philosophy on achieving goals can be applied ty men and women of all ages and levels of education and success. It’s powerful in its simplicity.

The Think Big Question

The word possible on a wallWhat was the approach Michelle Cass took that created such a winner for Starbucks?

It’s one she’s used successfully in her career working with many Fortune 500 companies. She says her mantra is …

“Let’s think of how big this can be.”

This is a wonderful reflective question that doesn’t just apply to business goals.  We can also ask ourselves that question when it comes to our everyday goals, including personal finances, family, relationships, vacations, health, and lifestyle.

If you’re going to dream, why not dream big? It doesn’t make any sense to think small when thinking big doesn’t take any more effort.

Application Exercise

Take a moment right now and think about a goal you are currently working on; maybe it’s a plan for a family get-together or finding a way to increase your savings.

Now apply that question. Write down any ideas that come to you. In the Prosperity Plus course I took, we were asked to leave no stone unturned.

Don’t edit yourself. Just let the ideas flow.

Now, using your new ideas, rewrite your plan.

Has it grown?

Is it better than it was?

Did you think big?

It’s up to you, really.

If you have a task or responsibility, shoot for the moon. You get to choose what you strive for in life.

Aiming for big results can make your world better for you and everyone you care for.

Accomplishing great things feels so rewarding. You might even surprise yourself with what you’re able to accomplish.

“When you believe something is impossible, your mind goes to work for you to prove why. But when you believe, really believe, something can be done, you mind goes to work for you and helps you find the ways to do it.

Dare to Think Big

To start seeing the world as incredibly abundant.

Don’t think of lack or just enough to get by.

Think big, much bigger, and envision big change rather than small, insignificant change. Imagine big things in your life. What you consciously tell your subconscious ends up as action. Your subconscious drives your actions, and your actions are what create the reality in your life.

Gass knows this. When Starbucks purchased Seattle’s Best Coffee, she employed her “think bigger” mantra. In just a single year, she took Seattle’s Best from 3,000 distribution points to over 50,000. That’s what happens when you think big.

The idea is to catch ourselves thinking small and turn our minds to ask ourselves that question. How big can this be?

I used to view my financial condition as set in stone. I didn’t see how flexible the numbers could be. My breakthrough came when I wanted to take an expensive course. I keep calculating how much money had to come out of my savings account to pay for the course. I looked at my finances as unchangeable,

Then I realized money is fluid and flexible. That freed my mind to look at the situation in a different way,

I signed up for the course, and never once saw a dip in my saving account because I saw it as a flow, and incoming money more than made up for the outflow for the course.

It’s learning to unstick our little thinking and our fear.

With practice, the art of thinking big becomes a habit.

Name three people you’ve heard about that habitually think big.

I’ll give you a hint. One person I can think of is Elon Musk. Who else fills the bill?

Think Big Next Steps
