Introduction to Think Big

To think big, means we have to stretch.

Have you ever felt like your dreams are too big or too impossible to achieve? If so, this article is for you. In our journey of inner transformation and personal growth, setting and achieving ambitious goals plays a crucial role.

Do you feel a little intimidated by the subject?

I remember attending a conference hosted by Unity Canada.

We participated in a two-day workshop, part of which was creating a mission statement.

I remember the instructor, Jackie Woodside, telling us that if our mission statement didn’t scare us we needed to go back and rewrite it until it did.

It took me a few tries but I eventual created a scary mission statement.

Then she made it ever scarier for us because each one of us had to stand up and read our mission statement to the other participants.

This post will walk you through the steps to not only set those big dreams but also to turn them into reality.

By the end, you’ll feel more comfortable, and  you’ll understand why to think big is essential and how it can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth.

Think Big: The Power of Ambitious Goals

The Wright Brothers Plane. Believe It Is Possible

Our beliefs shape our reality.

If you believe something is impossible, you won’t take action towards it. This is a natural survival instinct to avoid potential failure or danger.

In the wild African savanna failure pretty much, meant death. Today we still equate failure with death in the form of humiliation and embarrassment, even though positive psychology has debunked that myth.

Equating failure with positive growth and opportunity is still suspect.

Remember the saber tooth tiger? It’s extinct. You are still here.

So, once you start believing that something is possible, your mind begins to find ways to make it happen.

You begin to think big.

This mindset shift is the first step to setting and achieving ambitious goals. Think of visionaries like the Wright brothers who believed in the possibility of flight and turned their dream into reality.

Practical Exercise:

Write down a goal you’ve always thought was impossible. Then, list three reasons why it could be possible. Reflect on this list daily to start shifting your belief.

Knock Down the Mountain

When you first start to think big, ambitious goals often seem overwhelming.

To combat this, break down your big goal into smaller, manageable milestones.

These mini-goals not only make the process less daunting but also build your confidence as you achieve each step.

By focusing on these bite-sized goals, you can maintain positive thinking and stay motivated.

Practical Exercise:

Take your big goal and break it down into five smaller steps. Write these steps down and plan a timeline for achieving each one. Celebrate your progress as you complete each milestone.

Look for Past Proof

Photo of a man used out Think Big Blog postReflect on your past achievements and challenges you’ve overcome.

This history is proof that you have the power to achieve big things.

One of my big achievements was training and participating in two half-marathons at the ripe age of 64.

If you’d asked be a couple of years earlier I would have told you that it was impossible.

Additionally, look at the successes of others who have accomplished what seemed impossible.

May example of this is Space X. What would be yours?

These examples can serve as powerful motivation and evidence that you too can achieve your ambitious goals.

Think Big First Then Go Small: Draw up a Plan of Action

Once you have your milestones, create a detailed plan of action.

Research what it will take to reach each step, talk to others who have succeeded, and gather as much information as possible.

Write down your plan and use it as a roadmap to guide your actions and keep you focused.

Think Big By Taking Action Daily

The final step is to take consistent action. Daily efforts towards your goals reinforce your belief in their achievability. Each action, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal and makes it feel more tangible and real.

Big Goals Require Big Growth

Now that you’ve learn to think big. We now turn our attention to how we grow as a person to achieve our goals.

If you downloaded the free goal planner we included above you are now set for the next step.

To achieve big dreams, you must grow—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Setting and pursuing lofty goals pushes you out of your comfort zone and challenges you to become more. This growth is a crucial part of the journey and leads to profound personal development.

In Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey the first step for any journey is to leave our comfort zone or allegorically “The Shire”, our small neck of the woods that we are familiar with and comfortable in.

We are going on an adventure. Adventure challenge us to find our inner strength so we can slay our dragons and return to our “shire” to share our knowledge.

Did I make you more comfortable or just overwhelm you?

What If?

What Happens If You Fall Short?

Setting big goals and aiming high creates a sense of urgency and motivation.

Even if you fall short of your ambitious goal, you’ll likely achieve more than you would have with a smaller, more conservative goal.

This mindset encourages you to push your limits and strive for greatness.

So, really, falling short doesn’t matter.

What Happens If You Are Successful?

Imagine the incredible changes in your life if you achieve your big dreams. Visualize this success in detail and let it inspire you.

What if you dared to dream even bigger? Setting and achieving ambitious goals not only transforms your life but also opens up new possibilities you might never have imagined.

This what is know as a win win scenario.

JournalPractical Exercise

On a piece of paper or in a journal write out a description of what you day would look like if you achieve your goal. Use power words and all you senses to make you goal feel real to you right now.

Setting and pursuing ambitious goals is a powerful tool for personal and spiritual growth. By believing in the possibility, breaking down the journey into manageable steps, drawing from past successes, planning meticulously, and taking daily action, you can achieve incredible things. Remember, it’s not just about reaching the goal but about who you become in the process.
