Life-long Learn and How it Can Benefit Your Inner Transformation

Lifelong learning poster Question why is life-long learning important to Inner transformation and self-growth?

Life-long learning is a form of self-education based on your own self-growth and inner transformation and is considered voluntary and informal. Unlike formal learning, this is a self-directed and motivating experience.

Unlike formal education, we can freely engage our desire for a deeper understanding of ourselves, our place in the world, and the purpose we are here to fulfill.

Many people know the value of staying physically active, but did you know that staying intellectually active is also important? Lifelong learning can help keep your mind sharp and ensure you stay engaged in an ever-changing world.

Today we explore the Value and Benefits of Life-long learning.

We hope to inspire you to either get started or reinvigorate a life-long learning practice.

“Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it.”

The Value of Life-long Learning.

There is no greater value of lifelong learning than the ability to stay curious about the world and the nuances that make it go around. Curiosity leads to questions, leading to the need to discover the answer.

Lifelong learners tend to search for new information and different ways of accomplishing things. These people ask a million questions and can carry on any conversation.

When you are curious about various things, you have the advantage of not letting boredom set in. In addition, curiosity helps you become a well-informed, truly rounded person.

Quality of Life Is Improved

Learning new things has a way of keeping your mind sharp and staving off any decline in your cognitive abilities. The more opportunities you have to engage your capacity to critically think and problem solve, the better your brain can function clearly.

For instance, a new study at the University of Regensburg in Germany found that writing in red helps us store in our memory.

I am a big proponent of using colored pes and pencils in journaling for their creative power.

When was the last time you did something new or different or unusual?

Increases your Self-Motivation

When you take the time to seek out new learning experiences, you have the opportunity to increase your confidence which, in turn, becomes a domino effect of motivation to learn more.

Can you think of a time when new learning increased your confidence and motivated you to do even more?

As an example from my own experience, joining a walking club in a new town to meet new people, led me to a fuller appreciation of the skills involved in walking (who knew, right?). But soon I was motivated to train for a 1/2 marathon. The boost in confidence and a wonderful group of new friends gave me a morale boost just when I most needed it.

Overall, the true value of learning lies within yourself. The more you seek out more learning opportunities, the more you will find yourself wanting to learn even more. Being curious and acting on it are the best ways to improve the quality of your life.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning not only remains young but becomes constantly more valuable - regardless of physical capacity.

Benefits of Lifelong Learning

Self-Growth

Constantly finding ways to learn new things can lead you to personally grow beyond what you thought was possible. This is because knowledge can light a fire in you that helps snap you out of your comfort zone.

Many people get bored with their daily routines, so much that they tend to go through life almost by rote. Continuing this behavior can wreak havoc on your personal life and ultimately stunt your growth.

When you actively seek out interesting things, it tends to open the door to many future opportunities that you did not have before.

Here is one example from the book.

“If all things turned to smoke, the nose would become the discerning organ.”

If your situation were greatly transformed, could you let go of the past ad adopt new ways of thinking? (Source: Roger von Oech Expect the Unexpected.)

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

When it comes to being a lifelong learner, you should keep in mind that the more you know, the more you can cope with anything that comes your way.

More and more people are plagued with mountains of stress and anxiety in today’s society. However, expanding your knowledge can give you a sense of accomplishment that helps calm you. Getting lost in something you enjoy is also a great way to calm down and relax.

When I started Beautiful Summer Morning in 2006, my stress levels were off the charts. I didn’t understand what I was doing. I had innumerable problems with the programs I used. Having my website go down was akin to the start of WW 111!

Now I either know how to fix things, or who to ask for help. And my stress level is way down.

Action Step

Action step iconOn a piece of paper or in your journal create a list of the things that give you the greatest amount of stress. You could call it something like “My Stress List” or “What I complain about most.”

Once you have your list. Choose the item that is the most stressful for you

Then ask. What steps can I take to learn more about this situation?

List solution.

If it’s some financial situation what courses or coaching would reduce my stress levels. Curate your own study curriculum. Don’t forget to include lots of practical applications.

Keeps you Engaged with the World

The only way to discover the world around you is to get involved. The best way to get involved is to seek out learning opportunities that will help you make sense of this crazy world.

From this knowledge, you understand

The world around you, and if you are interested, it can help you find ways to get more involved.

Whether you are looking to improve your personal or professional life or find ways to improve the world, lifelong learning is the key.

Back to my example of joining a walking group Not only did I find great motivation but I also made life-long friends in the process. This resulted in n lively conversation and a deeper connection to the community.

What passions, hobbies, or interests do you have that you can pursue outside your typical learning environment?

Libraries are a great source of local clubs and interest groups.

Meetup.com is another source of groups with a wide variety of interests

And if you can’t find what you are looking for, you can create it easily enough.

Rather than becoming a learning recluse think of it as creating your own university campus.
